How To Create A Catchy Brand Name for Your Fashion Line

One of the most important aspects of any fashion line is its name. This means that some serious time and consideration should go into creating a name before you make anything official. Similar to how a brand is known by their company, the goal for a designer is to be known for their fashion line. So, the name will follow you, which is something you should be aware of during the naming process.

To create a catchy name for your fashion line you can use a name generator to see if there’s a suggestion you like, use the name or initials of the owners to create a brand name or combine two words to create a new word that describes the feelings you want the customer to feel while wearing your designs.

Since there are several ways in which people can create unique and catchy brand names for their businesses we are going to go through and discuss a few of the most popular ones. However, before you begin the naming process there are a few items you should probably note such as trademarks.

Trademarking Your Fashion Line

As you are trying to create your catchy brand name you will need to double-check that the name is not currently in use. Specifically, that it is not trademarked by another fashion line or that another company does not have specific items, i.e. winter wear, trademarked under a specific name.

This is essential because legally it can create issues for your brand later on when you grow as you may gain backlash from the other brand’s supporters, legal action may be taken by the other brand if they feel you are stealing their trademarked items, and you could have to change your name altogether.

So ensuring that this step is accomplished whenever you find a name you like and feel is a strong contender for being the fashion line’s name is essential. Plus, if the name you decide on is not trademarked in any way, that allows you to trademark it for your brand. Most of these trademarks will cover and protect items such as your brand name (fashion line), logo, and slogan if you have one.

Allowing your work to be better protected and hopefully preventing legal issues from occurring in the future as a result of any trademark infringements.

Creating A Memorable Name

As you are creating your fashion line’s name you will want to keep a few ideas in mind. Such as, making sure that the name is easy to pronounce and spell. While any publicity that you may receive is good publicity, you want to make sure that your brand’s name is consistently being spelled and pronounced correctly. Especially while your brand is growing.

Ensuring that it is memorable, yet still short to some extent is essential as well. This will allow the line to become easily recognizable. Plus, it’s easier to have word-of-mouth marketing when people remember the name and can say it easily.

Random Generators

Now a random generator may not be the ideal method for many people, however, it is a great option if you are indecisive or find yourself lacking inspiration. The generator is the equivalent of someone throwing a dart at a map when they don’t know where they want to travel next. It helps to give you other options and sort of makes you realize that you may have been thinking on a smaller scale previously.

There are websites such as namify that are designed specifically for generating fashion line names. While the results may be out there or a bit generic at times, they can spark inspiration. You can even specify if you want a name for shoes, clothing, accessories, etc.

Just keep in mind as you use random generators that the results tend to be basic and not very descriptive so they can require a bit of further tweaking to fit your needs.

The Named After Route

This option is typically a go-to for many people and tends to be a popular choice. Anyone who had to name a group or team in school when they were younger probably used this technique once or twice, especially with people’s initials. If they line up well enough you are awarded a nice and short name.

This in turn means that it’s most likely easy to pronounce and spell, hence it ticks all of the boxes we mentioned earlier on. For example, a girl named Denise Marie is starting her own fashion line. She could name it Dema, Dena, or even Diaries which are all combinations of her first and last name.

Or the initial route she could go with DM on its own and have it be pronounced Dee-Emm. Or she could name it DreaM so that the initials stand out more so than the other letters. There are several ways to name a brand after the founder of co-owners.

The New Word Combination

Who doesn’t enjoy creating a new word? Whether it’s a combination of two words that already exist, such as fantabulous (the combination of fantastic and fabulous) or a completely new word such as bappy (which may or may not be a word but it sounds like it could be.)

Did you know that you can have words added to the Oxford English Dictionary? All you need to do is have the word printed in magazines, books, lyrics, etc. The more a word appears and is used in a similar context the more likely it is to be added. So while this naming concept may seem a bit bizarre, it is quite common.

As well, some of the most recognized brands in the world, Band-Aid and Kleenex, were originally just brand names people created that has now become synonymous with the names of the products. People now call all adhesive bandages Band-Aids even though they are not all produced by Johnson and Johnson. It goes to show how effective marketing and a catchy name can be when combined.

Alternative Naming Options

Remember when we mentioned that there were several ways to come up with a catchy name for a fashion line? We are going to dive into a few other, less popular, options that still work just as well if they fit the type of name you are looking for.

We have pun-y names, which are ideal for those who love to find humor in any situation and enjoy making others laugh. This may not be ideal for a more professional line of clothes but streetwear or comfy clothes are ideal for it. People tend to remember puns and who doesn’t enjoy a nice laugh while shopping? An example could be Triple Thread (triple threat) for a line that offers multiple products or Clothing Time (closing time) as a more vague option.

Alliterations or tongue twisters can be a fun option as well. They may not be the easiest for everyone to say, but chances are people will try to say them enough that they remember them. However, they all don’t need to be as intense to be considered tongue twisters, it could be simpler like Denise’s Designs or Carl’s Clothing.

Those are a few of how you can create a catchy brand name for your fashion line. Whether you want to go for the more personal route of naming it after yourself with the initial or alliteration methods, using a random generator to come up with something, or the funny route by using a pun. There are a ton of ways to create a catchy name for your fashion line.

Do we have to worry about copyrights when it comes to brand names?

No, you just need to worry about trademarking your brand’s name, not copyrighting it. Since clothing items are considered to be useful items that everyone needs rather than artistic creations copyrights do not apply to them. This is why applying for your trademark is essential to protecting your work when it comes to a fashion line.

Should my fashion line’s brand name have sentimental meaning to it?

No, unless there is some sort of story you want your brand to tell, there is no need to choose a name with sentimental meaning. It can be something that came to you one day, a phrase you enjoy, your version of a word, etc. The options are endless as long as no other clothing brands are using the name you come up with.

Is there a timeline for creating a brand name?

There is no definite timeline for creating a brand name, but it is typically one of the initial steps in the fashion line process. The name needs to be decided on and approved early on to allow the marketing to begin, to allow clothing items to be made and labeled, and so on. Anything that requires the brand name will be put on hold until it is finalized which unfortunately does not leave a ton of room for someone to create a brand name.
