Executive Summary

An executive summary is a summary of your business plan. Think of it as your elevator pitch. You’ll be giving a brief overview of how your business will be run and what your plans are. When you’re presenting your business plan to potential investors, this will be their first impression of your business. You’ll want it to be a good one.

Ask the Big Questions

In writing a business plan, you’ll be asking yourself a lot of big questions. You’ll need to show what kind of clothing you’ll be selling. You’ll need to ask them as you’re writing the business plan because when you present your business plan, your investors will ask them too.

Business Description and Company Structure

The next thing you’ll need to present is your business description. You’ll need to show what kind of clothing you’ll be selling. You’ll probably want to have drawings of your clothes to present for this. It’s okay if you don’t have any photos of clothes on models to show, you should at least have something to present. You’ll need to explain who your clothing line is for. If it’s for kids, you need to explain how your clothing line will appeal to kids. If your clothing line will have a unique feature of some sort, you’ll need to explain what that new feature does to make it unique to your brand and appealing to your target consumers.

Your company structure is also important. When you’re presenting your business plan to potential investors, they will want to know how you intend to run the business. How will you define your business legally? Will it be an LLC, a corporation, or some other legal structure? Any legal structure will have perks and drawbacks and you’ll need to do some research and possibly consult an attorney before deciding on a legal structure.

Above all else, your investors will want to who is responsible for what. Who runs the business? Who runs the company’s day-to-day operations? Who runs marketing? These are all things investors want to know.

Mission and Vision Statements

What is your mission when starting a business? Try to think beyond “making money.”  Everyone wants to do that. What do you want to bring to the market? What will you bring that is unique? It doesn’t have to change the world of fashion but it does have to differentiate itself from the competition. Your mission statement should also include the demographic you intend to serve and how you intend to serve them.

Your vision statement should include where you intend to go with your business. What do you consider successful?  Do you intend to start a business to make lots of money? Do you intend to revolutionize the world of fashion? How do you intend to run your business? What values will govern your company? Whatever you intend to do, you should be clear about what your vision is. Not just for yourself or your investors but any contractors or employees you hire.

Your Product

This one is pretty obvious. Your business plan should include your product and services. What kind of clothing will you be producing? What season will it be for? Who is it intended for? Your investors will want to know that.

You should be upfront about your clothing prices. How much will materials and labor for your clothing line cost? Where will your clothing be manufactured and shipped from and how much will that cost? How much will marketing cost? How much will you have to charge to make a profit? What will make people want to buy your clothing? These are questions you need to answer in your business plan.

None of this stuff is exclusively for investors or employees As you write out your plan, you will start spotting inconsistencies and numbers that don’t add up. It’s best to iron out these things as you’re writing your business plan rather than when you have to present it.

How to Come up With Brand Names for Your Clothing Line

Marketing and Sales Strategies

No business survives without a decent amount of marketing. No one will buy your clothes if they don’t know they’re out there and they offer something different from the competition. Many of the greatest businesses and product lines were built on good marketing and advertising that has often stayed in memory longer than the actual products themselves.

Before you start your marketing campaign, you have to establish who you’re marketing to. Big brands survive by knowing who their audience is and targeting it. Every demographic has multiple clothing brands targeting them. Some clothing brands make clothing geared towards specific hobbies or lifestyles.

Of course, as a small business, you probably won’t have the luxuries that many of the larger clothing companies have when launching their first product lines. That said, there are strategies you can use. While you won’t be able to get the most famous supermodels in the world to model your clothing line, you can always look locally for people who model as a side job or are trying to move up in the industry. If you live in a mid-size or big city, you can contact local talent agencies to find such people.

You can also check the Internet. As marketing has become more Internet and social media-based, businesses have had to adapt. It has also opened up new avenues for new clothing makers. Even if you can’t get a major Hollywood celebrity, you can reach out to TikTok or Instagram influencers and get them to promote your clothes.

Next, you’ll want to decide your sales strategy. How will your product be getting to the consumer? Will you be selling online through Etsy or your website? Do you plan on starting small or going big? Are you going to go into retail stores eventually? You’ll also need to include price points in your strategy.

Competition Analysis

The next part of your business plan should have an analysis of your competition. You need to know what they’re doing. What are their costs? What is the customer experience with your competition and how will your product differ from it? What makes them successful? What strategies, such as marketing or distribution, are they using that you can use? What weaknesses do they have that you can use or avoid? What markets are your competitors not filling? What can you do to compete in the market? What risks do your competitors pose?

You can get some of this information by going online and looking at customer reviews. Customers can be the best information sources when it comes to competition analysis. They will tell everybody what they think, good or bad. Just remember that sometimes customers can be unrealistic in their expectations.

Another part of competition analysis is looking at the organizational cultures of your competition. While you probably won’t hear from the executives of your competition, you can learn a lot from ex-employees. Increasingly, job sites are letting employee review their former employers. Some of it will be good and some will be bad, If you take things with a grain of salt, you can get a decent picture of your competition’s organizational culture.

Remember, the clothing market is highly competitive. There are not only big brands in retail stores and on Amazon, but there are numerous smaller clothing makers who had the same idea as you. Knowing your competition will help you figure out how to compete and thrive in the market or if you can,

Production Plan

One of the most important parts of your business plan is your production plan. You can’t sell clothes that don’t exist, after all. How will you be producing your clothes? Will you be producing your clothes locally at a print shop? Will you be going to a maker space? Will you be outsourcing to a factory? Most importantly, how much will your production costs be? If necessary, you may need to alter your production plan if it doesn’t seem profitable.
